Ryan The idea of time passing has dramatically altered and clarity-unclarity reminds us to take stock, to listen, and to reflect upon every passing minute. And in this reflection, to perhaps take a breath and try to let some of the noise from daily life – the constant rolling news and scrolling timelines – recede into the background, allowing the almost-hidden sounds and pure thoughts to become that little more clear.

Dear thoughts are in my mind and my soul it soars enchanted As I hear the sweet lark sing in the clear air of the day For a tender beaming smile to my hope has been granted And tomorrow she shall hear all my fond heart longs to say I will tell her all my love, all my soul's pure adoration And I know she will hear my voice and she will not answer me nay It is this that gives my soul all it's joyous elation As I hear the sweet lark sing in the clear air of the day

about

This album consists of two pieces: 'clear' (2017) and 'lark in the clear air' (traditional Irish). The first piece is only displayed as two tracks to make bandcamp happy. These two tracks make up the final 37 minutes of a longer recording of a performance that took place in my living room on the last morning of August in 2017. The performance started at nautical twilight and finished just after the first birdsong of the day came in through the kitchen window. It was first exhibited in the morning of the opening of Flight Path, an exhibition in Huddersfield curated by Jude Lin in September 2018. Here is an extract from a text I emailed Jude about the work:

"clear thoughts is a recording of a performance that took place this morning (31.8.17) between 4:51am and 6:14am. It was so nice to sing with the windows open and the sky changing from deep blue to cold blue. There were a fair amount of traffic sounds, and no birds at all until just after 6am. The birds are only heard very quietly at the end so listen out carefully during the exhibition. The word clear is hardly clear at all."

The full 77’ version of the piece has been recently exhibited at Repeating isn’t Repetition, an exhibition in Huddersfield curated by Jorge Boehringer in March 2020. Repeating isn’t Repetition closed early just after it’s opening night due to lockdown in the UK. We like to think that the exhibition is still repeating in the space. However, as my sound piece remains off I decided to release this album so that I can continue to be part of the exhibition, at distance.

The final track is a recording of a traditional Irish folk song with words by Samuel Ferguson, recorded in my living room on the last day of May 2020.
